1.4301 Stainless Steel - An Overview
EN 10088-2 1.4301 X5CrNi18-10 Stainless Steel is one of the the most widely used stainless steels and also known as 18/8 (Old name) which links to 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Where 1.4301 is the EN material number and X5CrNi18-10 is the steel designation name. And is a Austenitic stainless steel. Let us look at more detailed material properties of 1.4301 Stainless Steel.
1.4301 Mechanical Properties
Density 7900 kg/m3Young’s Modulus (Modulus of elasticity) at 20°C is 200 GPa
Tensile Strength - 520 to 720 MPa or N/mm2
Yield Strength - Can not be defined, so 0.2% proof strength is 210 MPa
1.4301 Hardness
For cold rolled strip with thickness below 3mm HRC 47 to 53 & HV 480 to 580For cold rolled strip above 3mm & hot rolled strip HRB 98 & HV 240

Chemical Composition
Steel Name | Number | C | Si | Mn | P | Cr | Ni |
X5CrNi18-10 | 1.4301 | 0.07% | 1% | 2% | 0.045% | 17.5 % to 19.5 % | 8% to 10.5 % |
Corrosion Resistance
Good corrosion resistance against water, but never used in presence of sulfuric acid in any concentration1.4301 vs 1.4305
1.4301 is machinability is very low but 1.4305 is a very good machinability 1.4301 is having very good weldability but 1.4305 is not good for welding1.4301 vs 1.4307
1.4307 is a low carbon version of 1.4301, with improved weldabilityOther Facts About 1.4301 Stainless Steel
- 1.4301 K240 is the most common grounding profile (grain size) used
- Welding method most suited for stainless steel is TIG welding, and the welding process code for weld symbols on drawing is 142
